The Old 80/20 Rule

In business, when I first started managing people I learned that (80% of the work is done by 20% of the employees) this also holds true in the Fitness Industry when enrolling new members. However, it works the exact opposite in the “Big Box, One Size Fits All gyms and training programs” This is exactly why I left that world behind me in 2002. These places need so many members to cover their expenses that some will do and say anything to get you to join in on their reindeer games. But this is not a fairy tale world, this is reality! 20% of you who do this will stick with it and 80% will not. Human physiology and anatomy will dictate that these programs are contributing factors to the obesity problem in America into becoming escalated to the current epidemic proportions. The more you exercise, the more you need to nourish your body. PERIOD! Any weight you lose with these programs is mainly fluid and tissue and very little body fat if at, all and you are destroying your basal metabolic rate (BMR). This, in turn, will make it much more difficult when you rush back next year to do the same thing over and over and over and over again. Each time you do this and stop, you will gain a minimum of 20% more weight than you had before you began.

Next month will be the 25th January that I will help people or “The New Years Resolutioners” get started on their fitness quest. But before I do this, I am impelled (again) to explain to everyone out there in that if you are NOT already in shape you can NOT join in on the same programs that the “In Shape” crowd is doing to maintain their shape, or “Take it To the NEXT Level” You have to start out with the basics.

Number 1 is proper nourishment for your body.
Number 2 is a moderate resistance training program.
Number 3 is aerobic training (keeping your heart rate at 60-70% of your max)

It’s like the Pied Piper in this country. People want to do what everyone else is doing even if it’s not right for them. Well if anyone knows anything about me. I DO NOT! I am here to teach fitness as if I was a surgeon performing an appendectomy. It will be BY THE BOOK. I will not invent any new exercises and I will not be showing new clients anything what I did when I was a competitor.  I have the knowledge and experience to know that I don’t have to make you so sore that you can’t move for 4 days after our 1st workout, just to make you think I’m the best trainer in town. I will not parade you around the gym doing walking lunges and I will not put you on a bosu ball or teach you the latest “functional training” moves when your goal for the New Year is to LOSE WEIGHT. I will teach you how to lose weight and keep it off without having to waste your time and money with all the latest fads and gimmicks being taught by people that were in diapers when I started teaching fitness over 25 years ago.

So when embarking on your fitness quest this year please seek out a program that will guide you through all the steps of a beginner before throwing you to the wolves just to see how many of you survive past Valentine’s Day. Find a gym that does not allow “internet or weekend certified” trainers that do not have a primary or degree in sports medicine or exercise physiology. BTW, exercise science is a P.E. degree which is great if you are only interested in running faster or jumping higher. I will teach you all as if you were my brothers and sisters or mother and father. Stay healthy my friends.
